In 2003, a German company called OpenSource Consulting (OSC) released a software package called OTRS. OTRS was designed to be a trouble ticketing system for customer support, similar to systems used by large companies such as Microsoft or Amazon.
However, in early 2018, there have been rumors about discontinuing OTRS as open source. The reason given was that the company OTRS AG wanted to focus on their enterprise version OTRS software, and that they said “maintaining OTRS open source was becoming a drain on resources”. From this point the community work degraded rapidly and OTRS AG was only release about 1-2 years later the maintained OTRS version to open source. But a few years later this stopped also.
This news came as a surprise to the many businesses and organizations who had come to rely on OTRS, as it was one of the most popular open source trouble ticketing systems available. While there are other open source ticketing systems available, OTRS was unique in its ease of use and wide range of features.
Many companies and their responsible person have been now in need for a new path. Luckily we are on open source, so that a big community can go on with its own path or the sources. If you want to read more about what a solution may be read here OTRS free community edition discontinued what now?
